Vol. 349 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork School Extension.

16.

asked the Minister for Education the action she proposes to take to solve the very serious overcrowding problem that has arisen at Rathcormac national school, County Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department have agreed in principle to grant-aid the extension of the national school at Rathcormac, County Cork, and the Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to report on the feasibility of providing the additional accommodation. The commissioners report is awaited.

My Department have also agreed with a view to relieving overcrowding in the short term to grant-aid the provision of a prefabricated classroom at the school. A grant will be sanctioned when the Commissioners of Public Works furnish a report on the matter.

When does the Minister of State expect that report from the Commissioners of Public Works.

The board of management of the school made representations to us in relation to extra accommodation because their pupil numbers have increased. We have agreed to provide a prefabricated building. Once we agreed to provide that building the chairman of the local board of management made representation to us in connection with toilet facilities at the school. We again requested the Office of Public Works to examine the provision of those toilet facilities. We are awaiting this report and as soon as it is received we will deal with it almost immediately.
