Vol. 349 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prefabricated Classrooms.

21.

asked the Minister for Education the number of pre-fabricated classrooms used in national and vocational schools (a) in the country and (b) in County Galway.

The information requested by the Deputy as to the number of pre-fabricated classrooms in use in national and vocational schools is not available.

The number would vary from time to time and is affected by such factors as new buildings becoming available to replace prefabricated rooms or the necessity to meet an urgent need by the provision of temporary accommodation.

In this connection also I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 18.

Has the Minister an estimated number of prefab buildings in use in national or vocational schools?

I do not. I understand that in 1980 there were over 1,000 prefab buildings, in primary schools.

In relation to the £2 million which was allocated for primary school buildings, can the Minister say how many schools will benefit by the replacement of prefabs?

I cannot give that information. If the Deputy puts down a question I will supply him with the information. Not only is the £2 million provided for the replacement of prefab buildings but it is also to update inadequate or unsuitable accommodation at primary school level. It would not necessarily apply the £2 million to the replacement of prefabs exclusively.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
