Vol. 349 No. 8

Written Answers. - Flour Imports.

446.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the critical situation of the Irish flour millers due to United Kingdom imports at very low prices; and that many independent flour millers will be out of business by the end of the year if some action is not taken; and in view of the fact that his Department and the Department of Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism are concerned, the proposals the Government have to rectify this situation; if the Government will make a case to the EC Commission or with the British authorities to resolve the problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am, of course, aware that flour imports from the UK have been causing difficulties for the flour milling industry here. However, EC rules prohibit the imposition of restrictions on imports from other member states and it is in our interest, as a major exporter of agricultural products, that import restrictions generally should not be applied.

My Department have brought the difficulties caused by the flour imports to the notice of the EC Commission and the UK authorities but again because of EC rules the action open to those authorities is limited. Essentially what is required is that Irish bakers and other flour users should have regard to the consequences for the economy and for employment generally arising from the use of imported flour. I have stressed this on a number of occasions in my dealings with these and other interested parties.
