asked the Minister for Communications the cost of providing security at our major airports; and if any increased security is envisaged in the near future.

The combined airports police and fire service provided by Aer Rianta at the State airports cost approximately £5 million in 1983. Of this amount it is estimated that 65 per cent — 70 per cent or some £3.5 million could be allocated to security costs. These figures do not include costs incurred by other agencies e.g. the Army, Garda, etc. The level of security is subject to periodic review.
