Vol. 350 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Milled Peat.

19.

asked the Minister for Energy if he agrees that the present conflict between the ESB and Bord na Móna regarding the price of milled peat is a source of worry to the later's work force; and if he will take steps to ensure that matters will be concluded so that jobs at Bord na Móna are not jeopardised.

I accept that this is a source of worry to the Bord na Móna work force, and to other employees as well. It is my intention that this matter will be brought to an equitable conclusion very soon.

Can the Minister indicate how soon this will be decided on?

Very soon. I have attempted to allow a situation to develop in which both boards will be able to arrive at their own conclusions. In the event of no conclusion being arrived at, I will have to take up the matter with both boards. I hope it will be sooner rather than later — within a matter of weeks given the urgency and importance of the situation.

Is the Minister aware that for some time workers in Bord na Móna have been very anxious about the whole situation? They feel their jobs are in jeopardy. In view of the fact that the season has started and work is at its height on the bogs, can he ensure that this uneasiness is set at rest as quickly as possible?

I fully understand the concern expressed by the Deputy and for that reason I want to bring the matter to a conclusion very quickly.

Has the Minister given a directive in relation to a price reduction for Bord na Móna milled peat?

No specific direction has been given.

I take it the Minister anticipates that there will be a reduction which will enable Bord na Móna to continue selling to the ESB and therefore prevent the closure of perhaps seven or eight peat powered stations.

As I said, I do not intend to comment on aspects of the strategic plan. It is a matter for both boards to resolve. I want to protect as many jobs as possible in Bord na Móna and the ESB and to ensure that there is a just and equitable relationship between both boards. There are conflicting areas in terms of supply of fuel to the ESB. I think the matter can and will be resolved between both boards.
