Vol. 350 No. 1

Written Answers. - Galway Environmental Works.

547.

asked the Minister for the Environment if proposals for the environment works scheme from Galway County Council have been received in his Department; the projects submitted; the amount of money involved; the projects approved by his Department for Galway this year; and the grant allocation in each case.

A list of 55 environmental improvement proposals costing £546,000 was received in my Department on 30 March 1984 from Galway County Council. As the Government have decided to discontinue the Environment Works (Youth Employment) Scheme, no allocation can be made by my Department for any new works and the council was informed accordingly on 4 April 1984. However, information on a number of youth employment and training schemes which are operated by the Department of Labour, the Youth Employment Agency and AnCO has been sent to the county council and it is open to them to consider whether some of their 1984 proposals could benefit under these schemes.

Funds have been made available for the continuation in 1984 of certain approved projects which local authorities had commenced in 1983 under the Environment Works (Special Projects) Scheme. In the case of County Galway, I allocated last month the sum of £190,000, as requested by the local authorities, to enable the following works approved last year to be continued or completed: —amenity park at Long Point, Loughrea; amenity scheme at Clifden beach, harbour and waterfall areas; amenity public park at Salthill.
