Vol. 350 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Maynooth (Kildare) Estate.

5.

asked the Taoiseach if there have been any developments regarding the possible acquisition by the State of Carton estate in Maynooth, County Kildare; and whether any consideration has been given to the utilisation of the property if it is acquired.

(Dún Laoghaire): The position in regard to Carton House and Demesne in Maynooth, County Kildare, has not changed since the Minister of State, Deputy Nealon, replied to a question on this subject from the Deputy on 2 November 1983. Kildare County Council are still considering the draft development plan which will have considerable implications for the future of Carton.

Have any overtures been made to the owners of Carton estate or have the owners made any overtures to the Government with a view to possible disposal?

(Dún Laoghaire): As the Deputy is aware, an application has been lodged for the rezoning of this estate with Kildare County Council and, pending the outcome of that decision, it would be improper to make any statements regarding approaches made. We will have to await the outcome of the decision by Kildare County Council as it is strictly a planning matter.

Will due consideration be given to the fact that Carton House has a particular significance historically and architecturally? Every opportunity should be availed of to acquire it for the nation and I hope disposal will not take place prematurely without the knowledge of the Government.

(Dún Laoghaire): Carton House is in private ownership and every effort will be made to have this matter resolved to everybody's advantage, especially that of the State.
