asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of citizens about whom information is retained on computer in his Department; and if information so recorded is used by his Department for any other purpose.

My Department maintain at the Passport Office a computer list of names and dates of birth of citizens in connection with passport applications and issues. This computer listing has been in operation since 1 January 1979. On 1 May 1984 it contained 685,828 names. This record is used only by the Passport Office.

In addition, salary and wages information for my Department is maintained on computer in respect of 679 persons. This information forms part of the central payments system for Government Departments operated by the Central Data Processing Service of the Department of the Public Service.
