Vol. 350 No. 5

Written Answers. - Decentralisation of Government Offices.

534.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if he will now consider the decentralisation of Government offices to the regions outside Dublin to help the economies of those regions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Decentralisation is a term often used to describe the transfer of certain offices to areas outside of Dublin. This programme is a matter for Government who decided, in connection with the 1983 budget, that because of cost factors it should be cancelled. This decision was announced by the Minister for Finance, in his 1983 budget speech.

The responsibility of the Minister for the Public Service in such a programme would extend only to the determination of appropriate numbers, and arranging for the transfer, of staff to the centres concerned.
