Vol. 350 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conveyancing Procedures.

9.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if the Government have proposals to deal with the reform of conveyancing procedures; if he is satisfied that the present arrangements, which are very costly and unnecessarily so in many cases, are adequate; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would like to inform the Deputy that a report has been received in my Department from the Restrictive Practices Commission of their inquiry into the effects on competition of the restrictions on conveyancing and the restrictions on advertising by solicitors. Although there is no statutory requirement to publish the report, it has been the custom in the past to publish such reports and I would hope to do so in this instance as soon as I have decided on its recommendations. In the meantime, I do not think that a statement along the lines requested by the Deputy would be appropriate.
