Vol. 351 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballymun (Dublin) Flats Complex.

18.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline his intentions in relation to the office block in the Ballymun flats complex, Dublin, as outlined in a recent newspaper article.

It is my personal opinion that high rise flats are not ideally suited for use as family accommodation and in that respect the Ballymun experiment has not been a success and should not be repeated. As the Deputy will appreciate, consideration of the difficulties arising and of various possible approaches to a solution is a matter for Dublin Corporation, taking account of the overall housing situation in their functional are and the financial implications. I understand that the corporation have, in co-operation with the residents of the area and the Eastern Health Board, been examining ways in which living conditions in the estate could be improved and a number of specific proposals to this end will be discussed at a meeting of the corporation letter this month.

Can I have the Minister's assurance that the proposals which will come from the joint meeting and which are included at present in a report on the development in Ballymun will have the same neccesary financial support from his Department to make it a success?

As I said, Dublin Corporation are the authority who have full responsibility for the Ballymun flats and any proposals which come to me will be considered.

In what context did the Minister make the original comments in relation to Ballymun? Can I get a copy of the original speech?

I will certainly give the Deputy that information.

Question No. 19 postponed.
