I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics of the number of summonses served by the Garda Síochána are not compiled on a national basis. In 1980, proceedings were taken in respect of approximately 403,000 summary offences and the number of summonses whould be roughly of that order. The number of persons involved was less — approximately 275,000. Figures of proceedings taken are not available in respect of 1960 and 1970. Other statistics that may be of interest in the general context of the question are however, compiled and published in the Annual Reports on Crime of the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, copies of which are available in the Library.
