Vol. 351 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Galway Bridge.

517.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the present dangerous condition of Inishnee Bridge, Roundstone, County Galway; if he will indicate which authority are responsible to ensure that the bridge is safe for vehicular traffic; and which Department are responsible for the provision of money to build a replacement bridge.

As I indicated to Deputy Molloy on 22 February 1984, the position is that this bridge does not form part of the public road network and accordingly Galway County Council as road authority do not bear responsibility for any necessary remedial works. The council have powers under the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1964, in relation to dangerous structures. The question of invoking these powers would be a matter for the council acting as sanitary authority for the area. The payment of road grants from my Department's Vote may only be made in respect of public roads.
