Presumably the Deputy has in mind the number of self-employed persons who were added to the record for income tax purposes since January 1983.
Statistics are not compiled in such a manner as to enable the precise information requested to be given but the available data show that the number of self-employed individuals assessed to income tax in the year ended 5 April 1984 was about 165,000 or some 7,000 greater than the corresponding number of persons assessed in the year ended 5 April 1983. It is not possible to distinguish the amount of tax paid by the latter group as that amount is merged in the collection process with the tax paid by self-employed individuals as a whole.
