Vol. 351 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rosslare Harbour Veterinary Services.

615.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the cost of veterinary inspections and services at Rosslare Harbour for the years 1982 and 1983; the time inspections were carried out; and how the cost was borne.

The approximate costs of veterinary inspections and services at Rosslare Harbour for the years 1982 and 1983 were £81,500 and £97,000 respectively.

A twenty-four hour service is provided at the harbour and the services consist mainly of:

—inspections carried out on incoming vessels (ferries) at time of disembarkation,

—disinfection, as required, of arriving passengers and vehicles,

—supervision of the landing and inspection of permitted animals,

—health and welfare inspection of animals prior to loading for export and inspection of the carrier vessels.

The costs involved are borne on the Vote for Agriculure. Since May 1982 a fee has been charged for certificates issued in respect of veterinary inspection of livestock prior to exportation and fees totalling £3,367 and £3,115 for 1982 and 1983 respectively were collected on cattle and horses exported through Rosslare Harbour.
