Vol. 351 No. 6

Written Answers. - North-South Third-Level Education.

626.

asked the Minister for Education if she is giving any consideration to the area of third-level education and the benefits of much closer co-operation between North and South in view of the anticipated over-capacity in Northern colleges and a corresponding under capacity in the South over the next ten to 15 years.

I am very much alive to the benefits of closer co-operation between North and South in the area of third-level education and the situation is kept under constant review. The matter was adverted to in the discussion which I had with the Right Honorable Mr. Nicholas Scott, MP, Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Education when I visited him in Belfast on 20 January 1984. It should be borne in mind, however, that available surplus capacity in Northern Ireland does not necessarily occur in the areas of greatest need in our third-level colleges.
