Vol. 351 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Galway Historical Sites.

467.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give an inventory of all sites and monuments in County Galway which are of archaeological, architectural and historical value in the county; the location of each; the number in the ownership or care of the Office of Public Works; if it is proposed to take charge of any other locations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

University College Galway is undertaking a preliminary survey for inventory purposes of the monuments and sites of archaeological significance in County Galway (including the islands off the coast) with funds provided by the Commissioners of Public Works. Field work on the survey is well advanced and a sites and monuments record for the county will be published by the Commissioners in 1985. The sites and monuments record is aimed specifically at agencies concerned with environmental change and will consist of a numbered list of monuments for each six inch ordnance survey sheet for County Galway accompanied by a corresponding set of annotated ordnance survey maps. An inventory consisting of a classified list of the monuments with a brief description of each and accompanying distribution maps will be published by the Commissioners as soon as possible after the publication of the sites and monuments record.

The number of monuments in State care in County Galway is as follows:

In the ownership of the Commissioners

73

In the guardianship of the Commissioners

7

Subject to preservation orders

17

Listed

156

Total

253

Additional monuments will be taken into State care as the need arises and as resources permit.
