Vol. 351 No. 9

Written Answers. - Sporting Injuries.

400.

asked the Minister for Education the action she proposes to take in view of the high incidence of serious injuries in sport; if she has got up-to-date records of serious sporting injuries; if she and her officials have considered the action that should be taken regarding advice, education and facilities for treatment and such like; if she accepts that there is a relationship between the level of injuries and the low level of physical education training in Irish schools; if she accepts that there is a great lack of awareness of the possibility of serious injury in the field sports if adequate control is not exercised; and if she proposes to consult with the sporting bodies and the medical profession regarding this matter.

While records of sporting injuries are not available in my Department I am aware that in the case of some sports the incidence of serious injury may be high. In this regard I expect that the final report and recommendations of the special committee set up to study all aspects of sports injuries in this country will be shortly submitted to me so that the issues raised by the Deputy can be carefully examined.

I have previously been in consultation with the sports bodies, medical schools, etc., following the publication of an interim report prepared by the Special Committee on Sports Injuries and I intend to have further discussions with these bodies subsequent to the publication of the final report.
