Vol. 351 No. 9

Written Answers. - US President's Visit.

448.

asked the Minister for Finance the total costs incurred by his Department arising directly from the visit to Ireland of President Reagan and in particular (a) the hire of trees for use on Leinster Lawn; (b) the erection of a canopy at the entrance to Government buildings; (c) other alterations or improvements to Leinster House; and (d) other expenses.

It has been a long-standing practice not to disclose the type of information sought by the Deputy. Successive Governments have held the view that to publicise the cost of individual items or events, or the total cost of an official or State visit, would be regarded as an extreme discourtesy to the distinguished guest.
