asked the Minister for Justice the number of people that are detained in Irish jails; and the categories of crime and age-groupings involved.

, Limerick East): The population in the prisons and places of detention on 18 June 1984 was 1,612 males and 39 females.

The latest available statistics as regards categories of crime and age groups are contained in tables 8.A, 8.B and 18 in the annual report on prisons and places of detention for the year 1982 which was laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas on 24 November 1983 and subsequently circulated to the Members of both Houses. The 1983 annual report is at present in the final stages of preparation.
