asked the Minister for Education the number of secondary school-teachers who have opted for early retirement due to illness for the years ended 31 March, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984; and the rates of pension those people are entitled to.
Written Answers. - Teachers' Retirement Pensions.
The numbers of members of the secondary teachers' superannuation scheme who retired on disability during the years in question are as follows:
Year ended 31 March |
No. of Retirals |
1980 |
8 |
1981 |
13 |
1982 |

1983 |
13 |
1984 |
15 |
Under the terms of the secondary teachers' superannuation scheme, pension is calculated on the basis of 1/80th of pensionable salary for every year of pensionable service subject to a maximum of 40 years. A gratuity equal to 3/80ths of pensionable salary for every year of pensionable service, subject to a maximum of 40 years, is also payable.
Members of the scheme who are obliged to retire because of disability may be credited with additional years of pensionable service — the actual amount of such credit varies in accordance with the individual circumstances.
