Written Answers. - Employment Appeals Tribunal.

460.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of appointments that have been made to the Employment Appeals Tribunal during the course of each of the last three years; the names of those who have been appointed; the fees or salaries paid to each appointee since his appointment; and the level or scale of fee payable to each member of the Employment Appeals Tribunal.

There were seven appointments to the Employment Appeals Tribunal during the three years 1981 to 1983. The names of those appointed and the fees paid to them from appointment up to the present time are as follows:

1981—M/s. Sylvia H. Geraghty, Vice Chairman, £14,519; M/s. Brid Horan, Ordinary Member, £3,119.50; Mr. George Lamon, Ordinary Member, £9,288; Mr. James Quinn, Ordinary Member, £8,528.50.

1982—Mr. John O'Mahony, Vice Chairman, £6,157; Mr. Barry Hickson, Vice Chairman, £25,952; Mr. Frank Nyhan, Vice Chairman, £7,600.

1983—No appointments.

The scale of fees currently payable to members of the tribunal is as follows: Chairman, £216.50 per sitting day; Vice Chairman, £117 per sitting day; Ordinary Member, £48.50 per sitting day. In addition, tribunal members are entitled to payment at half the fee rate for the time necessarily spent in travelling on tribunal business on days other than sitting days. Also, whenever a division of the tribunal convenes specially to make a determination on a case which was not decided on the day of the hearing a consultation fee is payable as follows: Chairman, £42.50 per consultation; Vice Chairman, £34 per consultation (when the division is chaired by a Vice Chairman); Ordinary Member, £24 per consultation.

asked the Minister for Labour, the number of appeals made by employers to the Circuit Court against decisions of the Employment Appeals Tribunal in respect of each of the past three years; the number of such cases known to him; the number where the decision of the tribunal was not upheld; and the number of appeals pending.

464.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of appeals made by liquidators of insolvent companies to the Circuit Court against decisions of the Employment Appeals Tribunal in respect of each of the past three years; the number of such cases known to him; the number where the decision of the tribunal was not upheld; and the number of appeals pending.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 461 and 464 together. Information concerning appeals to the Circuit Court against decisions of the Employment Appeals Tribunal is furnished to the tribunal by county registrars' offices under the Circuit Court rules contained in Statutory Instrument No. 316/81. I understand from the tribunal that the information supplied is in respect of the combined total of appeals by employers and employees. No separate statistics are supplied in respect of appeals by liquidators of insolvent companies.

The following table shows the information available to the tribunal, concerning the combined total of appeals by employers and employees to the Circuit Court against decisions of the tribunal—

I should mention that the statistics quoted may not be fully comprehensive as complete information has not been furnished by a small number of county registrars' offices.
