Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Membership Application.

305.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon was not accepted for membership of the Garda Síochána; if a file is being retained which will discriminate against him in future application by him or his family for membership of the Garda Síochána or any state employment.

, Limerick East): I am informed by the Garda authorities that on two different occasions a number of years ago an application from the person in question for entry to the force was rejected by the commissioner, who is solely responsible for assessing the general suitability of candidates. It has not been the practice to give any more detailed reason that this for rejecting an application. I understand that on a later occasion an application from him was accepted but that he did not qualify at the written examination.

The Deputy will appreciate that the Garda Síochána must retain records of applications of this kind and, in fact, if they did not do so, I would not be in a position to supply the information sought in the parliamentary question. The Garda authorities have no reason to believe that the matters which arose in relation to the earlier applications from the person in question are liable to become an issue again in any context of application for employment.
