Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Vocational Teachers' Examination Fees.

312.

asked the Minister for Education when there will be an increase in the examination fees payable to part-time teachers employed by the VEC; the fees payable to such teachers: (a) for the preparation of examination papers; (b) for the correcting of examination papers in each of the last ten years and the total percentage increase in the fees payable during that period, and whether the percentage increases in the aforesaid fees are identical to or similar to increases in fees and salaries paid in other areas of the public service.

It is assumed that the Deputy is referring to the examination fee payable to part-time teachers in the colleges of technology under the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee.

The fee payable to the teachers in question for setting and correcting examination papers has already been increased in respect of the 1984 examinations. The fee payable is a comprehensive one, covering both the setting of papers and marking of scripts.

The rate of fee each year over the past ten years has been as follows: each year in the period from 1974 to 1981, £32; in 1982 and 1983, £90; in 1984, £102.20.

The total percentage increase in that period amounted to 220 per cent approximately. The increases have had reference to the rate of the general pay increases in the public service over the period 1972-1984.
