Vol. 352 No. 10

Written Answers. - Dublin Industrial Dispute.

449.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will make a statement regarding the strike of 12 women and men since 19 July 1984 at Dunnes Stores, Henry Street, Dublin, arising our of their refusal to handle South African goods; and the steps he has taken to assist in the resolution of the dispute.

I understand that this dispute began in mid-July when an assistant, acting in accordance with a directive from her union, refused to handle South African fruit. As a result she was suspended and the union entered into official dispute with the company. Pickets were placed on 19 July. The dispute affects the Henry Street branch, but that branch is carrying on business. All other stores of the firm concerned are working normally. I have taken a personal interest in this particular and unique case to ensure that the industrial relations agencies of the State are available, on request, to help the parties in seeking a resolution of the dispute.
