asked the Minister for Education if she has examined within her Department the position whereby mature students cannot qualify for grant aid of any kind towards their studies in third level colleges; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The question of making special provision in relation to mature students in the schemes of financial assistance for third level students has been examined in my Department and, due to present financial constraints, it has not been found possible to include such provision in the schemes. I would emphasise, however, that mature students are eligible to apply for grant aid subject to the normal regulations.
Mature students admitted to the colleges of education are eligible for grants under the colleges grants loans scheme provided that they satisfy the academic requirements and come within the means test applicable to the scheme.
