Vol. 353 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sheep Schemes.

564.

asked the Minister for Agriculture to outline the sheep subsidy schemes that will be in operation this year; when they will commence; and if hogget ewes will be included on any ewe premium scheme.

567.

asked the Minister for Agriculture when a decision will be made on the type of ewe to qualify for the ewe premium grant; and the amount of money that will be lost to this country through changes made in determining eligibility of ewes.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 564 and 567 together.

The sheep subsidy schemes in operation this year are (1) the 1984 sheep headage scheme in disadvantaged areas and (2) the 1984-85 EEC ewe premium scheme which is open to flock owners in all areas. Inspections under the sheep headage scheme have already been completed and payments will commence this week.

The arrangements for the EEC ewe premium scheme were announced recently. Applications will be issued in January and inspections will commence in April. It is expected that payments will be made next July after the EEC determines the total amount of the 1984-85 premuim for each member state. Only ewes (including hogget ewes) that have lambed already or are visibly pregnant at inspection will be eligible for 1984-85 premium. On this basis and apart from the usual winter losses on which premium has never been paid, no reduction in the total amount payable to Ireland should arise.
