Vol. 353 No. 4

Written Answers. - Insurance Premiums.

490.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the total premiums paid by the consumer in 1983 and 1984 to date for (a) car insurance; (b) commercial vehicles; (c) the number of uninsured (i) cars and (ii) lorries there are in the State; and (d) the estimated loss of insurance premiums because of this situation in 1983 and 1984 to date.

The latest information available in respect of motor insurance premiums is that contained in the summary of statements of assurance business for 1982, published by the Department and laid before both Houses earlier this year. 1983 figures are presently being compiled and will be published in due course. This information does not distinguish between various categories of vehicle and the premiums shown are net of re-insurance.

My Department do not compile information regarding the number of uninsured vehicles. I can only direct the Deputy to page 22 of the Garda Report on Crime for 1983 which showed a total of 91,147 proceedings undertaken in respect of uninsured driving in that year.

Precise data on loss on premiums due to uninsured driving is not available.
