Vol. 353 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Factory.

12.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is aware of the concern of the former workers at a factory (details supplied) in County Kerry who were led to believe that the factory would be re-opened in September 1984 and to date this has not happened; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As previously announced, the IDA in July of this year concluded negotiations with a US company for the establishment of a project in the factory premises of the company referred to by the Deputy. At that time it was envisaged that the project would commence operations around now but, unfortunately, the company have encountered a number of difficulties which have led them to delay proceeding with the establishment of the proposed Irish operation. The Industrial Development Authority, who are maintaining close contact with the company, are hopeful that, if present problems can be resolved and no new difficulties arise, the company will decide to proceed with the project in the not too distant future.

Is the Minister aware of the discontent of the former staff of the factory, Kingdom Tubes, with the present situation as they or their union have nothing in writing and these promises have been ongoing for the past 19 months?

I am aware of the frustration of many people who were put out of work because of redundancies and factory closures in recent years, and the staff of Kingdom Tubes have my full sympathy in this matter. The IDA have been extremely active in getting a takeover company to come into Kingdom Tubes and it is hoped that their efforts will be rewarded. I am optimistic about the outcome. I would not like to say more at this stage.
