Vol. 353 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Dwellings.

8.

asked the Minister for the Environment when the review of statutory provisions on the management and letting of local authority housing will be published.

The review of the statutory provisions on the management and letting of local authority housing will entail new legislation on which work is in progress in my Department. I will be endeavouring to have the Bill published as soon as possible but I cannot at this stage give a date for its publication.

Why not?

I have told the Deputy that the work is proceeding and I cannot give him a date today.

Could the Minister indicate to the House whether he expects to have this report before Christmas, Easter, summer?

No, in the next session, not before Christmas.

Will it be before the end of the Dáil session?

I have indicated to the Deputy not before Christmas.

Before Easter?

That is something, anyhow.

9.

asked the Minister for the Environment when arrangements will be devised to facilitate tenant purchase of local authority flats.

I intend to initiate discussions shortly with those authorities having significant numbers of flats in their housing stock with a view to devising workable arrangements for the sale of flats to tenants.

Could I ask the Minister if in those arrangements the flats will be properly repaired prior to their disposal and if the recent announcement that repairs would not be carried out in future by local authorities will not be implemented in cases such as this?

Infrastructural repairs will be done before they are sold to the tenants.

Could the Minister state when these arrangements will be made?

I have told the Deputy that we are working on them as quickly as possible. A great deal is happening in the Department at the moment.
