Vol. 354 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cork Apprentices.

752.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of young people in the Cork area registered with Manpower who have not completed their period of apprenticeship to the various trades because of redundancies or lack of sponsorship etc.

AnCO — the Industrial Training Authority — which makes regulations for the organisation and control of apprentice training in the trade groups of construction, engineering and metal, electrical, motor, furniture, printing and dental craftsperson, had 358 unemployed and redundant apprentices on its register in Cork city and county on 31 October 1984.

While most out of work apprentices notify AnCO there are some who do not and consequently are not on the register. On the other hand, some apprentices on the register fail to notify AnCO when they secure employment. On the basis of a survey of the AnCO unemployed apprentice register undertaken in 1982, about 40 per cent were found to be actually unemployed.

Of the 358 apprentices on the AnCO register, 119 who failed to find continued employment as apprentices on completion of their first year off the job training in autumn 1984 are registered with the Cork office of the National Manpower Service. Of the 119 registered, 114 are at present participating in the grant scheme for youth employment, in the community youth training programme or in block release or redundant apprentice courses. These courses count towards the period of apprenticeship. Other redundant apprentices registered with the National Manpower Service are included in the general register of unemployed persons seeking employment and are not readily identifiable.
