Vol. 354 No. 9

Written Answers. - Detention Sentences.

634.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons aged 17 or under who are serving sentences as a result of convictions for murder or manslaughter; the sentence imposed in each case; and the length of time served so far in each case.

Limerick East): There is one person in this category, who will be 18 this month. He is serving a sentence of three years detention having been convicted of manslaughter. He was committed on remand on 21 June and on conviction on 30 November 1984.

635.

asked the Minister for Justice the total number of juveniles in the 15 to 17 age group currently serving sentences for offences under the Children Act, 1908; the length of sentence imposed; and the offences in respect of which they are imprisoned.

Limerick East): I assume that the Deputy is referring to sentences specifically provided for in sections 103 and 104 of the Children Act, 1908. The position in that regard as far as the prisons, St. Patricks and other places managed by the Department of Justice are concerned, is that nobody under 17 is serving a sentence in accordance with those sections.
