Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Antibiotic Residues.

353.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the high levels of antibiotic residues found in pigmeat; and if he proposes to introduce regulations to eliminate the problem.

While evidence of antibiotic residues has been found in pigmeat the recent reports on the levels of such residues are open to different interpretations. Nevertheless, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics and growth promoters at producer level is a cause for concern, and there is a need to ensure that these substances are administered only under strict controls. Comprehensive regulations on the use of antibiotics and growth promoters in livestock production will be introduced early next year.
