Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Dublin Policing Requirements.

424.

asked the Minister for Justice when the review of the policing requirements of the Dublin Metropolitan Area will be completed; and the progress made to date.

Limerick East): I take it that the Deputy is referring to the review of policing requirements in the Dublin Metropolitan Area which was carried out by a team consisting of representatives from the Garda Síochána and from the Operations Research Section of the Department of the Public Service. This team has produced a report containing a number of recommendations of which some have been implemented and others are being implemented or are still under consideration.

I want again to make a point that has already been made about reports of this nature. This report is a confidential document prepared to assist those with responsibility for the management of the Garda Síochána and, in accordance with normal practice, I do not propose to publish its contents.

I can say, however, that the recommendations made in the report have been taken into account, for example in the introduction of a new rostering system designed to have extra gardaí on duty at times when there is greatest need for their services and in the assignment to particular stations of extra Garda strength as it becomes available.

I want also to make the point that reviewing the system of policing in the Dublin Metropolitan Area and elsewhere is, of course, an on-going process. Garda arrangements are continually under scrutiny to ensure that the police service provided is as effective as possible in all areas.
