Vol. 355 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soviet Jewry.

16.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make urgent representations to the Ambassador of the Soviet Union concerning the plight of Soviet Jewry having regard to the contents of the motion passed by Dáil Éireann on Thursday, 6 December and having regard to the fact that at the end of 1984 there were approximately 400,000 Soviet Jews who had expressed a wish to leave the Soviet Union and that only 900 were allowed to do so during 1984.

The text of the resolution adopted by Dáil Éireann on 6 December 1984, and the debate, in which Deputies from all parties put their views on record, have been published in the Official Report and have been reported in the press. The debate testified to the strength of public and parliamentary opinion in Ireland on this subject and I have little doubt that it was brought to the attention of the Soviet authorities.
