Vol. 355 No. 5

Written Answers. - Connemara Land Division.

402.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will stripe the many thousands of acres of commonage throughout Connemara; and if he accepts that failure to divide this land has caused it to be grossly under-productive.

Over the past three years 3,500 acres of commonages in the Connemara area have been divided by the Land Commission, with the agreement of the shareholders concerned. The question of initiating proceedings for the compulsory division of others is at present under consideration. Farmers who hold land in common are constantly being encouraged to divide it into separate units with a view to promoting better land use and those in the area who are interested should apply to the local office in Galway for assistance.
