Vol. 356 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Donegal Remedial Road Works.

455.

asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the severe frost damage caused to the road network in County Donegal, if he will send down a Department inspector to the county to assess the damage; and if he will provide a special allocation over the ordinary block grant to cover the extra cost to the county.

The assessment of damage caused to roads in Donegal due to the recent spell of severe weather is primarily a matter for Donegal County Council as road authority. Technical advice will be made available by my Department if required.

The funds available to me for road grants in the current year have already been fully committed. Accordingly, I am not now in a position to notify an additional grant for the purpose mentioned. Remedial works may be financed from the local authority's own resources (including the rate support grants), from the block grant and from the appropriate road maintenance grants already notified to the council for 1985. The position will be kept under review during 1985, having regard to the actual cost of the remedial works, the council's overall road grant programme, and expenditure in other areas.
