Vol. 357 No. 7

Written Answers. - Production of Whitethorn Quicks

827.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the scarcity of whitethorn quicks Crataegus Monogyna which is resulting in imports at inflated prices; if grant aid is being provided for producers; and the steps he proposes to take to have them produced here.

The production of whitethorn quicks is a traditional form of culture which can be expanded to meet increased market demand. Enlargement of fields reduced demand and prices for hedging plants. Consequently many producers cut back on production. More recently demand has increased and supplies are more scarce and expensive. The improved demand and prices provide the incentive for producers to increase output. It could also be advantageous for the growers to consider forming a group to improve the planning of their production and marketing. Grant aid is not envisaged for the production of thorn quicks.
