Vol. 357 No. 7

Written Answers. - Transfer of Prisoner.

606.

asked the Minister for Defence the reason the parents of a person (details supplied) who is a prisoner in the Curragh Military Detention Centre were not notified when their son was admitted to hospital; and if the prisoner could be transferred to custody in Dublin as the travelling expenses for weekly visits are a burden on his parents.

The prisoner in question was admitted to the General Military Hospital, Curragh Camp on 14 March 1985 but was transferred to the County Hospital, Naas, within two hours, with suspected appendicitis. His next of kin were not notified of his admission to the General Military Hospital at his express wish.

The question of transferring the prisoner from military to civil custody will be reviewed in August next when he will have served one year of his sentence. Should it be decided to so transfer him, the decision as to where he should serve the balance of his sentence would be one for the Department of Justice.
