Vol. 357 No. 7

Written Answers. - Fishery Statistics.

611.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry how far offshore Irish boats can operate; the number of tons of edible fish taken in 1984 by Irish boats; the number of tons of edible fish exported to foreign countries in 1984; and the value in cash to the economy of the export of fish.

The range within which Irish fishing vessels can operate depends on such factors as the size of boat, engine power and prevailing weather conditions. The larger Irish vessels are capable of operating throughout the full extent of our 200 mile zone on a year round basis. In recent times some of our vessels carried on fishing operations off the north coast of Scotland a distance of over 300 miles from their home ports.

Fish for human consumption taken by Irish registered vessels during 1984 amounted to 190,000 tonnes approximately. Exports of fish for human consumption for the year 1984 are estimated at 172,000 tonnes valued at £90 million.
