Vol. 357 No. 10

Written Answers. - Residential Property Tax.

596.

asked the Minister for Finance the total costs incurred by his Department in the administration of the residential property tax since its introduction up to 31 December 1984.

It is not possible to isolate the total cost incurred in the administration of the residential property tax from the overall cost of the administration of the Inland Revenue taxes as a whole, but it is tentatively estimated that the cost of collection of the tax since its introduction up to 31 December 1984 was of the order of £350,000.

597.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of residential property occupiers who have paid residential property tax since its inception up to 31 December 1984; if he will also specify the total amount in tax collected in that time; and if he will give all other relevant details such as the number of assessments still outstanding for payment and the amount of tax outstanding.

The number of persons who paid residential property tax since its inception to 31 December 1984 was 5,138 in respect of the valuation date 5 April 1983, and 2,301 in respect of the valuation date 5 April 1984. The total amount collected to 31 December 1984 was £2.10 million. As the Revenue Commissioners are still in the process of building up their list of the persons liable to pay the tax it is not possible to state either the number of cases still outstanding or the amount of tax involved.
