Vol. 358 No. 6

Written Answers. - Spike Island Detention Centre.

606.

asked the Minister for Justice if there is any truth in press speculation that central heating, television and video recorders are going to be supplied to a detention centre being set up on Spike Island; and, if not, if he will make a statement to allay public concern over what they consider would be an unnecessary waste of public funds.

Limerick East): As the existing system of heating by means of open fires is unsuitable for security and safety reasons, the provision of an alternative system of heating is necessary. It has not been finally decided what form of heating will be provided. Various alternatives are being considered.

A television and video recorder is provided at all the prisons and places of detention in the State, including Fort Mitchel on Spike Island. These items are used for education and recreational purposes and in the interest of maintaining good order in the institutions. I see no valid reason for departing from this practice in the case of Fort Mitchel.
