The percentage of public expenditure taken up by agriculture in each of the years 1982, 1983 and 1984 was, respectively, 4.9 per cent, 5.1 per cent and 4.7 per cent. Public expenditure for the purposes of this calculation was defined as Exchequer-financed capital and non-capital central Government expenditures gross of appropriations-in-aid, excluding expenditures by local authorities or State-sponsored bodies financed from their own resources.
