Vol. 358 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tax Deductions.

604.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the greatly increased tax deduction which has been taken from the April salary of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath; and if he will arrange a full review of all tax deductions for this person from April 1983, to April 1985.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the reason for the increased tax deduction in the taxpayer's April salary was due to the withdrawal of interest relief for the current year, 1985-86, pending clarification of her entitlement to that relief. The inspector of taxes will now communicate directly with the taxpayer in the matter and will also request certain information which is necessary for the purpose of determining her correct tax liabilities for the years 1983-84 and 1984-85.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the large tax deduction presently being taken from the pension of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that, on the basis of the information available to the inspector of taxes, the taxpayer's total income for the current year is not likely to exceed the appropriate age exemption threshold of £7,000. Accordingly, he is not liable to income tax for 1985-86. An amended certificate granting tax exemption for that year will be issued to him as soon as possible. When this certificate is put into operation by the former employer, the tax which has been deducted from his retirement pension since 6 April last will be refunded to the taxpayer.
