Vol. 358 No. 8

Written Answers. - Import Licence.

714.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his Department will grant a licence to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 who wishes to import three parrots into the country from England and is prepared to meet all the statutory requirements and regulations pertaining to quarantine and certification; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Strict controls on imports of all live birds, including cage birds, introduced last year because of widespread outbreaks in Britain of Newcastle disease in poultry and of a related type virus disease — Para-myxovirus disease — in pigeons have now been relaxed. An import licence for parrots will be issued provided the birds have passed an official HI test for Newcastle disease and are accompanied by a veterinary health certificate. On importation into this country the parrots must undergo quarantine at an approved premises.
