Vol. 359 No. 7

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 10, 11, 12, 8, 13 and 14. By agreement items 11, 12, 8, 13 and 14 shall be taken at 3.45 p.m. if not reached earlier. Private Members' Business shall be No. 24.

I should like to remind Members that the postponed division on the Vote for the Office of the Minister for Justice will be taken when Proceedings on the Private Members' Motion have been concluded.

Let me ask the Leader of the House in the absence of either the Taoiseach or the Tánaiste when it is proposed to have the promised debate on the Dooge Report. The Leader of the House will recall that the Taoiseach promised we would have a full debate on the report before the next European Council meeting.

I understand that time will be provided for such a debate on 26 June.

In this House?

When is it proposed to bring in the legislation on the testing of drugs on human beings? It has been promised a number of times.

I understand that it is the intention to introduce that legislation here in the House in the next session but, if the Deputy wishes I will obtain more precise information as to the timing for him and communicate with him.

I have been told on previous occasions that it would be introduced in this session. I take it that that has been changed.

We have a relatively full legislative programme for the remainder of this session. I have no recollection of any such commitment being given. However, I do not wish to dispute that with the Deputy at this point. I have already indicated to him that I will convey the latest information to him during the day.

Will the Leader of the House inform the House of the position regarding the local radio Bill, in view of the Taoiseach's commitment last week to bring the legislation before the House before the summer recess? In view of the dispute between Deputy O'Sullivan of the Labour Party and Deputy Mitchell of Fine Gael in relation to this matter, has the Bill been decided on by the Cabinet? Has it been finalised and when will it be published?

(Interruptions.)

I will not comment on the tendentious remarks made by the Deputy——

O'Sullivan or Leyden?

——which are wholly in character. However, it is the intention of the Minister for Communications to have this legislation available to the House within the next fortnight and to commence discussion thereon.

Let me ask the Leader of the House and the Minister responsible what steps he is taking to ensure the continuance of Irish Steel and if it is proposed to introduce a supplementary estimate——

That is not in order on the Order of Business.

It may not be in order in terms of this House, but it is very important.

(Interruptions.)

The Deputy will respect the Standing Orders of this House.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the serious threat to the saw milling industry with particular reference to the loss of 40 jobs at Irish Forest Products in Mountrath.

The Chair will communicate with Deputy Hyland.

Let me ask the Leader of the House and the Minister responsible about another matter. Will he indicate whether legislation will be required to give effect to the proposals we read about for the taking over of Nítrigin Éireann Teo?

I regret that that is not in order. It is only if legislation has been promised.
