Vol. 359 No. 7

Written Answers. - Louth Community Centres.

109.

asked the Minister for Labour the reason Knockbridge, County Louth, Community Council has been refused grant aid under the capital grant scheme for community centres; and if an inspection of the site was carried out.

A total allocation of £1 million was made available in 1985 under my Department's capital grant scheme towards the provision of community-recreational facilities. However, assistance sought under the scheme was far in excess of this figure.

In view of the limitations on available funds, it was decided that priority should be given to eligible projects which were in a position to commence work in 1985 and could produce evidence of the availability of a substantial local contribution.

I understand that work has commenced on the Knockbridge Community Centre. However, it was clear from the completed application that there was a problem about the availability of adequate local funds. It is regretted that in the circumstances the application from the community council did not meet the criteria for grant approval. Consequently, the question of an inspection of the site did not arise.
