Vol. 359 No. 10

Written Answers. - Fishing Industry Quality Standards.

26.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry in view of the general consensus within the fishing industry on the urgency of improving the quality image of Irish fish and fish products, if he considers it is vital to take steps to encourage improved quality throughout the Irish fishing industry by emphasising quality and the provision of more training for personnel involved in the industry.

It is clear that quality standards throughout the fishing industry could be improved significantly. The problem is largely attributable to shortsighted attitudes on the part of many involved in the industry. Steps to encourage improved quality in the industry are being considered in the context of the White Paper on fishery development now in course of preparation.
