(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Agriculture the actual income values in figures of farmers which gave rise to his recent statement that farmer incomes rose by 20 per cent in the last three years; and if he will state the official source of this information.

The statement that the average income of farm families in 1984 was some 20 per cent higher in real terms than it had been three years earlier is based on income data published by the Central Statistics Office for the years 1981 to 1983 and an estimate of my Department for 1984. These income figures were adjusted for inflation and by the number of family farm workers as estimated by my Department to give estimated of per capita incomes in current terms and in real terms as follows:
