Vol. 361 No. 1

Written Answers. - Night Court.

15.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the present unsatisfactory operation of the District Court system in Dublin and the heavy demands placed on the time of gardaí, he will consider the setting up of a night or early morning court in Dublin.

Limerick East): The arrangements for District Court business in the Dublin Metropolitan District are matters for the President of the District Court. In 1982 a committee, chaired by the then president, considered the question of a night court in the context of attendance difficulties for the Garda Síochána. This committee concluded that, contrary to popular support for the notion, the setting up of a night court would not be justified. I am not satisfied that there is sufficient reason to ask the president to reconsider the question at this stage.

If the Deputy cares to send me information on those aspects of the District Court's operations which he regards as unsatisfactory I will bring them to the attention of the president for his consideration. I should say that the president has made a number of changes recently to streamline the court's business.
